Day 11 of National
Game Writing Month! These game concepts are silly one-offs that will
never be considered for production. If you’re inspired by one, feel free
to use it, but it would be nice if you told me!
Game over screens are similar sights in games. If someone says they
haven’t seen once at least once in their life time then they are lying.
But what is a game over screen? And what does it mean to try again?
By starting over from where you failed is a good way to maintain
progress. The more time you spend with a game, particularly if it is one
section, the better you will get at it. Practice, skill and
memorization all come together so that when you try again you are more
likely to succeed.
Try Again? is a game that defies that convention. Each time you die,
the game will change. Add a new element here, change a pattern there,
redo the color scheme and/or randomize objects. What starts out as a
fairly simple retro platformer will become more unique, interesting and
challenging each time you die. Memorization and muscle memory will not
be the impetus for progress in Try Again? Death will be. So you must ask
yourself if you really want to Try Again?
Want to do your own NaGaWriMo? It’s fine if you start late. It’s a made-up challenge. Write a good one and include the hash-tag!
